A caller informed state police about 3:40 a.m. Friday that he suspected the presence of a baby outside the XtraMart at Bells Pond in Livingston. Troopers went to the business about 3:50 a.m. but failed to find a child, police said.
State police later received further information that led to the discovery of a newborn male in a garbage bag in a dumpster. Emergency medical technicians from the Greenport Rescue Squad arrived and determined that the baby was dead, according to police.
A subsequent autopsy determined the cause of death to be homicide by asphyxiation, police said.
